Message from the Chairman of the Board of Directors

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Historic Frederick Douglass High School Alumni Association, Inc., I extend heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all our members and friends.  Your tireless commitment, dedication and support to the leadership of the Association has enabled us to provide encouragement and assistance to the administration and staff  as they create and foster a culture of “Pride, Dignity and Excellence” for the students of  Frederick Douglass High School (FDHS).

As we bring this unusual school year to closure, we are reflecting on the plethora of issues that our students, their families, teachers, and administrators have encountered during the 2019-2020 school year. Covid-19 is a lethal highly communicable virus that has caused a pandemic which forced the entire world to come to a halt.    Thousands of individuals in our nation have died and families have been affected.  We still do not know when it will be safe for our schools and other institutions to open.  We take this opportunity to thank all of you for all the great contributions made during this and previous school years.  Your continuous support and generosity by sharing your talents, skills and monetary gifts have enabled us to provide support to the administration of FDHS,  enrichment activities and scholarships for the students, as well as serve as advocates for the school with community, city and state agencies and organizations.

Although attendance to schools, state legislation to finance school improvement, as well as other organizations and institutions in our community have come to a standstill during this pandemic, the issues and events that seriously affect our students and our city continue. Poverty, illiteracy, crime, the illicit traffic of narcotics, and violence, just to name a few, are part of the myriad of problems that impede the academic success of many of our young people.  Our goal is to do all we can to make the future bright and successful for the students of Frederick Douglass High School by providing them the nurturing environment which is their birthright as citizens of our city, our state and our nation.

As we approach the 2020-2021 school year, it is our sincere hope that each of you will support FDHS with renewed vigor and enthusiasm.  May you turn every challenge into an opportunity. May the impossible be possible for Historic Frederick Douglass High School Alumni Association in 2020-2021.   It truly takes a village of committed people who are willing to forget about ME and focus on WE.    I encourage you to stay in touch with the Association by visiting our website, HFDHSAAINC.NET, come to the monthly membership meetings, get involved, volunteer and bring a friend.  In unity and numbers there is strength.  If you have suggestions or ideas for alumni events, we want to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Becoming an active member of the Alumni Association is an opportunity to contribute your gifts. This is your Alumni Association and with your help we will make it greater.  Best wishes and good health to you and your families.
